1 Month Before Moving
- Obtain estimates from moving companies (ask about method of payment, when, damages, timing, etc.)
- File a change of address form with the Post Office
- Notify creditors, magazine and book clubs of your new address
- Decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity. ( consider having a garage sale)
- Have your services ( water, gas, electricity, telephone) turned off after your departure
- Contact utilities at your new home for connection
- Notify your children’s schools, your doctor, dentist, bank, church, clubs and any other organization that you belong to of your impending change of address
- Check home owner’s insurance policy to see if moving is covered.
- Transfer insurance to cover fire, theft, and personal property at your new home
- Return borrowed things, and collect things you’ve loaned
- Number your boxes (keep a list of items in every box, also mark on the box which room the box belongs in at the other house)
- Discontinue regular services such as newspapers, etc.
- Use up your frozen food supply or give it away.
- Drain the fuel from any small engine gas tank (lawnmowers,weedeaters, etc.)
- Clean Flooring and carpeting
- Arrange for children and pets to be away on moving day
1-2 DaysBefore Moving
Confirm arrangements with moving company 2 days prior to move - Get the name of the person in charge of your move and contact number
- Defrost your fridge
- Clean fridge and stove
- Remove fixtures that are to be moved
- Pack a box of things that you’ll need as soon as you arrive at your new house. (this might include disposable dishes, snacks, cold drinks, tea bags, coffee, electric kettle, non- aerosol cleaning supplies, light bulbs, garbage bags, bathroom items, light tools)
Take this box with you or have the movers load it last and unload it first.
Moving Day
Part 1 - Make sure plants are drained of excess water
- Make a final tour of your home, see that nothing is overlooked
- Lock all windows and doors, and turn off all switches
- Count the boxes make sure everything is loaded.
Part 2
- Count all boxes, check for damages (make note of losses.)
- Check appliances, lighting, and utilities upon arrival at new home ( call for services required)
- Ensure meters were read
- Set – up kitchen and bedrooms first
