Hummingbird Feed Mixture
It is great to watch the Hummingbirds zip around looking for flowers to get the nector, which gives them their incredible energy.
I keep two feeders for them, hanging above my deck, as do many of my neighbours and I enjoy watching them coming and going.
It is simple and inexpensive to feed these fragile little birds. Simply mix one part sugar to five parts water. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved into the water and pour into the Hummingbird Feeder. They love this mixture and before long you will have Hummingbirds lining up to get to the Feeder.
One half cup sugar to two and one half cups water will fill two standard size Hummingbird Feeders.
I was told many years ago not to buy the dye coloured Hummingbird Feeder mix as it would cause their young to be born blind. I don't know for sure if this is true, but decided that I would not buy commercial mixes just to be safe. I experimented and came up with the above mixture. It appears to be Hummingbird Approved.
Our tiny friends usully arrive in April and head south in late September or early October. I usually keep my feeders out until the end of October, just in case some stragglers need energy for their long flight south.
