Canada 150 Infrastructure Program to Benefit Muskoka

2017 will mark 150 years of the Canadian Confederation. Next year will be one filled with a variety of celebrations and programs to highlight not only our history, but also our community connections, which in turn help foster national pride when we come together. Our celebrations for the coming year are being coordinated by the government program Canada 150, working in partnership with different groups, businesses, local, regional and provincial departments to bring a year of celebrations and national pride to the forefront. August 4th marked the start of the 150-day countdown to Canada’s 150th birthday year. The countdown will bring some surprises over the coming months, including one which will bring almost $250,000 in funds to help improve the infrastructure of the Muskoka Region

In an announcement by the Small Business and Tourism Minister, on behalf of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program will provide funds to key Muskoka community projects in efforts to continue building economic development in the region, and strengthen not only our job growth and tourism revenues, but to also increase community pride and connection. The infrastructure funds will be put towards projects in Baysville, Dorset, Gravenhurst, Huntsville and Port Carling. Another $280,000 in funds will be sent for infrastructure projects in the Parry Sound District as well.

The Huntsville Public Library will get $16,942 from the fund to update a community multipurpose room for use by area community and not-for-profit groups. The renovation is geared towards making this community space user friendly in our high-tech world, with new acoustic sound panels, custom blinds and a ceiling-mounted video projector. Beyond modernizing a space for the Huntsville community, it is hoped this project will also increase visitors to the library overall.

Lake of Bays Township and its communities will also benefit from the Canada 150 funds. $80,000 will be used to replace the Baysville west dock walkway and $20,700 will go to expand the front porch of the Dorset Community Health Care Hub. The Lake of Bays Marine Museum will be given $19,500 to improve their facility interior including access to the second floor and display capacity, while Gravenhurst will receive $60,500 for exterior repairs to the historical Gravenhurst Opera House. In addition to these projects, the Visitors Information Centre in Port Carling will get $51,000 to make needed repairs.

All of these projects will highlight community connections and bring us together as we celebrate a year of Canada 150 events and programs. Our communities will also benefit through the improvements and innovations these projects will provide for residents and visitors alike. It is great programs like the Canada 150 Infrastructure Fund which help communities like Huntsville thrive.
