Your Community Idea Could Be a Part of Ontario’s 2017 Budget

Ontario is a province which cares about its communities and residents. The artistic and cottage lifestyle in Huntsville, and across Muskoka, is readily supported by Ontario’s government through a variety of programs and resources. A recent press release from the Ontario Ministry of Finance has announced the return of Budget Talks, an online resource for the public to weigh in regarding the 2017 budget which supports these resources. As a part of Budget Talks 2017, residents with innovative ideas to help strengthen our communities are encouraged to submit their idea as a proposal. Your community idea could be funded by Ontario’s 2017 budget.

While anyone can provide comments and general feedback through the Budget Talks portal until January 31st, 2017, idea proposals are due December 11th, 2016. Up to eight proposed ideas or projects will be chosen and funded by part of a $3 million fund from the Ontario Ministry of Finance. This is a chance for residents to make a difference, and one with big impact for the entire province, making for stronger community ties and connections across the region.

If you are wondering what could possibly be an idea the government would help fund, one big idea suggested by many Ontarians was launched in 2016. Beginning along the provincial highway 401 near Toronto, an LED mast lighting project was piloted in effort to lessen our carbon footprint on the environment. Huntsville and other areas around Ontario have followed suit as well by Embracing the Night Sky. This all began with an idea that came from someone.

If you are excited about an idea you want to share with the Ontario Ministry of Finance, there are some requirements to keep in mind when submitting your proposal. In addition to the December 11th deadline, proposals must fall within the scope of the government to be able to deliver and complete by the spring of 2018. Proposals must take no more than a one-time maximum $1 million investment, and be for a digital service, community event, area study, or pilot project. All awarded proposals must support of the following eight areas of focus as outlined by the Budget Talks portal:
  • Better Access to Child Care
  • Conserve the Environment With our Economy in Mind
  • Easier & Better Access to Health Care
  • Help Streamline Government Access & Services
  • Improve Community Infrastructure
  • Improve Relationships Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Peoples
  • Support Small Business Across the Province
  • Support Student Achievement & Potential

Now is the time to have your voice heard and share your ideas with the Ontario Government. 2017 is sure to be an exciting year full of new ideas. Together, we can improve our access to resources and services.
