January Events In & Around Huntsville & Muskoka

If you are planning a move to the Muskoka region, or you are a recent transplant, you may wonder what people do to pass the time during winter. Huntsville and the Muskoka region are a winter wonderland, where the snow is plentiful, allowing residents and visitors to explore our incredible trails, hills and lakes. We enjoy some of Canada’s best winter recreation around here, such as skiing, snowmobiling, dogsledding and snowshoeing; not to mention our personal favorite, curling. There are also plenty of great events and happenings in January, when winter has taken hold of the region. Listed below are some upcoming events you may enjoy.

For a family-friendly weekend, head over to Burk Falls January 14th - 15th for their 21st Annual Winterfest. From bowling games to a winter jam dance, or snowman contest, ice skating, and an incredible toboggan hill, everyone is sure to have a lot of winter fun, indoors and out. Contests include a Bed Race, Egg Toss, and Puck Toss, with awards to be presented at the end. Make it a real winter treat and enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride too.

Skiers will be all over Huntsville for the annual Arrowhead Nordic Muskoka Loppet, a popular skiing race which the entire family can enjoy. The race is set for Sunday, January 22nd, and all ages are welcome.  Not only will there be skiers vying for Southern Ontario District (SOD) racing points, there is a fun 5km kids race, and in addition, a Special Olympics race. No matter if you are a competitor or just love to ski, this race around Arrowhead Provincial Park in Huntsville is not to be missed.

Be inspired by recreational adventure at the upcoming showing of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, January 24th - 25th, at the Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville. Get ready to be amazed and awed by the incredible journeys through the wilds of several exotic destinations, traverse along raging rivers, snowcapped peaks and more. With almost 20 adventure films to be presented, this viewing in Huntsville is part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, which takes these films to over 400 locations worldwide.

Because the winter season can be difficult, with many facing unexpected situations or challenges, now is a great time to help out the nation at large. Canadian Blood Services is sponsoring a blood donation drive at the Canada Summit Centre in Huntsville on Saturday, January 28th. Canada Blood Services is asking everyone if they can “resolve to give life” this year, with a life-saving donation.
