Understanding Building Permit Requirements for Your Muskoka Cottage

Summer is an ideal time for renovations and updates to your Muskoka cottage. Whether you are a DIY kind of person, or plan to hire a contractor to do the work, it is important to know the proper process and paperwork needed for home improvement projects. Having a clear understanding can save you time, stress and possibly money, especially by avoiding costly mistakes or omissions.

Depending on the type of project you have planned, you may or may not need a building permit. Within the Town of Huntsville there are certain regulations in place, the Town website has a Building Permits and Inspection page with information available to help homeowners determine what they may need. For anyone with waterfront property, this could also include a Site Plan approval. Beyond getting approvals and permits, there are also fees to be paid and inspections completed throughout the project and after your new renovations are completed.

While online information can be helpful, the internet doesn’t always have all the answers, and it can’t replace one on one interaction with experts. If you have questions or concerns about your home project plans, the Town of Huntsville wants to help. This summer there will be two building information sessions anyone in the area can take advantage of. The first one is coming up at the end of the month, on June 30th at the Home Depot Professionals Appreciation Day. If you can’t make this one, there is another planned for August 4th. This second session includes a fundraising barbeque and will be held at the Rolston Home Building Centre.

If your cottage is outside of Huntsville, or any other incorporated town in Muskoka, there are still building permit requirements to follow for home improvements. You will want to review the ordinances set by the Ontario Government to ensure proper rules are met and followed. Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has also put together an easy to follow Citizen’s Guide to Building Permits. We highly recommend reviewing this guide before you begin your project.

Whether you plan to do the work yourself or hire someone to complete your home projects, save yourself time and keep your stress levels lower by planning ahead. Knowing what you as the homeowner will be required to have for building permits and fees, will help your renovations go smoother. If you are looking to sell or buy a Muskoka home, cottage or condo knowing you have a team of experienced real estate professionals on your side will help make the process a great one.
