Safety Alarm Numbers to Live by in Muskoka

Keeping our Muskoka homes and families safe is a top priority. One way to help ensure home safety is with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; provided they are properly installed and cared for. A recent article posted by the Huntsville Doppler highlights some key numbers to keep in mind regarding your home safety alarms. While we already know to call 911 in an emergency, remembering the numbers 10-7-6-1 can also help save a life.

As provided by Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers, the numbers 10, 7, 6 and 1 are an easy way to remember how to take care of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Smoke alarms last up to 10 years, if it has been a decade or more since you installed an alarm, now is the time to get a new one.  Carbon monoxide alarms last up to 7 years. When it is time to replace either your carbon or smoke alarms, keep note of the dates you purchased them, some place you won’t forget, so you can be sure to get new ones before it’s too late.

Batteries should be changed in both smoke and carbon alarms every 6 months. If you hear an intermittent chirp, this is an indicator that the battery needs to be changed.

Most alarm manufacturers suggest you test new alarms within one week of installation and clean them once per year; dust and grease can block the sensors over time.

These simple safety tools may seem like an easy thing to do, but they are also easy to forget about in our daily lives. Yet these alarms are important enough to help keep families safe that they should not be forgotten.

This is especially so in today’s world of super, energy-efficient homes. While energy efficiency is great for the environment and the wallet, homes are so well sealed now, that there can be little to no outlet for toxic substances such as carbon monoxide or smoke from fire, controlled or not. Alarms are a key life-saving tool to have.

Also, worth mentioning, you can save yourself a bit of time and effort nowadays, with a dual smoke/carbon monoxide alarm. These are among some of the newest innovations in digital home technology now available.
